JSW SAJSW coal launches METH2GEN R&D project with EU co-financing
Listed coking coal group JSW has launched the METH2GEN research and development project, which aims to simultaneously reduce methane hazards in mines and convert waste methane into hydrogen, the company said in a press release. The total budget for the project, which is supported by the EU, is EUR 25.6 million, of which JSW's budget exceeds EUR 20 million.
JSW reported that the METH2GEN project involves the implementation of a modern method of rock mass demethanisation using directional drilling, which will significantly increase the efficiency of methane capture in mines, including the Budryk mine. This will make it possible to achieve an efficiency of approximately 70 percent in demethanisation of mining walls.
"The use of this technology will not only allow JSW to increase safety, but also reduce costs and limit methane emissions into the atmosphere. This is another step towards modern, responsible mining," said JSW's deputy CEO for technical and operational matters Adam Rozmus, quoted in the press release.
The METH2GEN project is one of four large projects co-financed by the EU that are currently being implemented by JSW's Methane Removal and Management Office. The total budget for these initiatives is over EUR 63.8 million.
