National Centre for Nuclear Research and Westinghouse sign cooperation agreement
National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) and US-based Westinghouse have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at involving Polish scientists and technologists in the development of nuclear energy and providing Poland with new competencies, ministry of energy representatives said on Friday at the agreement signing event.
"Nuclear energy will become the driving force of the Polish economy. We want to be a leading country in the EU and the region in new competencies, to participate more fully in the entire chain. We want Polish scientists and technologists to take part in these investments – this sector will develop for years," said energy minister Milosz Motyka after signing the agreement.
Meanwhile, Deputy energy minister Wojciech Wrochna emphasized that the earlier promises are being fulfilled by involving Polish scientists and the Polish economy in nuclear energy.
Poland's 100-percent state-owned nuclear power SPV PEJ started preparatory works in October for building Poland's first nuclear power plant, based on Westinghouse technology.
The first Polish nuclear power plant in Lubiatowo-Kopalino will have three Westinghouse AP1000 blocks, built by the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium.
According to the updated Polish Nuclear Power Programme (PPEJ) project, the commercial operation of the first nuclear power plant unit in Pomerania is scheduled for 2036.
