Poland launches talks with France as part of partner selection process for 2nd nuclear power plant

Poland has officially begun talks on France's involvement in the competitive process of selecting a partner to build a second nuclear power plant, the Ministry of Energy (ME) announced on X. Earlier, Polish representatives raised this issue in discussions with the energy department of the United States.

"We have officially begun talks on France's involvement in the competitive process of selecting a partner for the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Poland," the energy ministry wrote on X.

It added that deputy minister Wojciech Wrochna held talks in Paris with representatives of the French government on the cooperation between Poland and France in the field of energy, including ways to ensure energy security and independence through low-emission technologies.

"Polish-French cooperation in shaping European Union regulations and policies supporting the achievement of common energy goals was confirmed," ME announced, adding that the representatives of both countries emphasised the role of exchanging experiences between Poland and France in building nuclear competences at the regulatory and economic levels.

This is expected to happen, among others, "through cooperation between Polish and French companies in supply chains for new energy projects."

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Energy published a statement following the visit of the Polish delegation to Washington. It pointed out that issues related to competitive dialogue in the context of selecting a strategic partner for the second power plant under the Polish Nuclear Power Programme (PPEJ) were discussed, among other things.

According to the guidelines for the PPEJ update, the two preferred locations for Poland's second nuclear power plant are Belchatow and Konin, with Polaniec and Kozienice as two reserve locations.

As Poland's Ministry of Industry (MP) announced in March, the selection of a strategic partner for the second power plant construction is possible at the turn of 2026 and 2027. The start-up of the first unit of the second nuclear power plant is planned for 2040, and the start-up of the entire plant is likely to happen in 2043.
