PSE agrees on grid development plan; estimated outlays until 2034 of over PLN 64 bln

Poland's power grid operator PSE has agreed with Poland's energy market regulator URE on a transmission grid development plan for 2025-2034. It assumes, 4,700 track km of new 400 kV lines, 28 new and 110 modernised substations and an onshore DC line, PSE said in a statement. The total estimated outlays for the planned investments amount to more than PLN 64 billion (EUR 15 bln) by 2034.

The document forms the basis for PSE's investments over the next decade. The plan includes variant scenarios for the development of the national power system KSE, plans for the expansion of transmission infrastructure and the results of generation resource adequacy analyses.

"The transmission grid development plan PRSP takes into account sectoral trends and structural changes taking place in the KSE, such as the progressive electrification of heating and transport and the emergence of new large electricity consumers, which will significantly affect the increase in demand for electricity and power in the system," it was written.

As stated, the development of the transmission network outlined in the document will provide the basis for carrying out the changes in the KSE environment resulting from the energy transition process, and one of the most important projects envisaged in the PRSP is the construction of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection, connecting the north to the south of the country.

This will allow power from new generation sources to be sent to consumers, without putting a strain on the rest of the transmission network.

The implementation of the plan is expected to enable an increase in the potential for the creation of new RES sources and will allow, among other things, up to around 18 GW of power to be derived from offshore wind, around 45 GW of photovoltaic plants and more than 19 GW of wind farms.

"Together with the production potential of other types of RES, this means the possibility to produce about 160 TWh per year of renewable energy in a 10-year timeframe. The implementation of the plan will also allow for the connection of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania and the commissioning of small nuclear reactors," they added.
