Poland to spend PLN 4 bln on cybersecurity in 2025; biggest cyberthreats from Russia and Belarus

The Polish government will allocate PLN 4 billion (EUR 933.1 mln) for cybersecurity in 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski told a conference. He added that the biggest threat to the country's cybersecurity comes from Belarus and Russia, the digital affairs ministry hopes to bring a cybersecurity certification bill before the government later in April.

"Today, Poland spends the most on cybersecurity in its history (...). If we were to combine two important areas, namely civilian and military (...), Poland's spending in the area of cyber security reaches PLN 4 billion," Gawkowski said.

"I would like these expenditures to be much higher next year, because there are a lot of needs, especially in the context of local government, which is the biggest responsibility for us today," he added.

Gawkowski continued that the prepared resilience and security fund implemented with the support of the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy, will include a large component of support for cyberprotection.

"After this year (...), it can be said that the greatest danger concerning directional attacks on Poland in the area of cyberspace concerns Belarus and Russia," the Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski said.

"In recent days, we have noted increased activity by Russian hackers and groups prepared to do so, especially on critical infrastructure concerning water and sewage systems," he added.

Furthermore, Gawkowski pointed out that the effectiveness of Polish services in the case of cyber-attacks is more than 99 percent.

"I believe that the law on cybersecurity certification will be adopted by the government still in April," he assessed.

"I hope that the act on the National Cybersecurity System will be on the government's agenda in the coming months, so that we can close 2025 with a full plan on how to build a system that will not only work efficiently from the technical side, but also has strong legislative foundations," he added.
