Poland's PM announces plans for Europe's largest transport hub
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced plans to develop the transshipment logistics hub in Slawkow in southern Poland into Europe's largest facility of its kind.
Speaking in Slawkow on Monday, Tusk confirmed that the state-owned Industrial Development Agency (ARP) and its partners will invest in the hub's infrastructure to "practically double its transshipment capacity."
"I can say without exaggeration that here in Slawkow, in Silesia, in Poland, we will have the largest logistics hub of this type in Europe," he said.
"This is not just about breaking records. It will also be a golden opportunity for Poland," the Prime Minister added, stressing the importance of maintaining the control over strategic places like as such.
According to Tusk, the terminal will be crucial in Ukraine's reconstruction and later will serve as a transshipment hub with Asia.
The head of ARP Wojciech Balczun estimated the project's cost at EUR 1 billion.
Euroterminal Slawkow is situated at the junction of the westernmost broad-gauge railway line and standard-gauge lines, facilitating the transshipment of containers transported by rail between the Far East, Asia and Western Europe.
The terminal is undergoing expansion aimed at reaching a transshipment capacity of over 500,000 TEU (standard containers) annually, up from the current capacity of nearly 285,000 TEU annually.
