Poland's environmental protection fund to grant PLN 800 mln to biomethane plants investors

Poland's National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) has obtained PLN 1.4 billion (EUR 330.54 mln) from the EU Modernisation Fund for green transformation in Poland, of which PLN 800 million (EUR 188.9 mln) will be allocated to subsidies for investors planning to build biomethane plants in the country, the Fund announced on its website. The call for applications is expected be launched in the first half of 2026.

"NFOSiGW has obtained PLN 1.4 billion from the Modernisation Fund. The funds come from the sale of European CO2 emission allowances. These are non-repayable funds earmarked for green transformation in Poland," the Fund announced on its website.

The funds are to be allocated, among other things, to a new programme for the construction of biomethane plants.

"We support the green transition in Poland by obtaining new funds for this purpose. The decision of the European Investment Bank paves the way for the launch of a new programme for the construction of biomethane plants next year, with a considerable budget of PLN 800 million," said the Fund's head Dorota Zawadzka-Stepniak, quoted in the statement.

"We will also direct additional funds to companies for projects to improve energy efficiency and develop smart power grids. These are extremely necessary investments that are changing the Polish economy and bringing real environmental benefits," she added.

Under the programme, investors planning to build biomethane plants in Poland will be able to apply for subsidies of up to 45 percent of eligible costs. The call for applications is planned for the first half of 2026.

In addition, the budgets for existing programmes (Energy-Intensive Industry – Improving Energy Efficiency and Power Engineering – Smart Energy Infrastructure) are to be increased, which will allow more beneficiaries to receive support.

"Moreover, NFOSiGW has received approval for another advance payment of PLN 200 million for the already existing RES programme – heat source for district heating," the Fund reported.

The EU Modernisation Fund is financed by the sale of 4.5 percent of the total pool of CO2 emission allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS). These allowances are sold in half-annual tranches by the EIB.

According to estimates, Poland may receive approximately PLN 60 billion (EUR 14.2 bln) from the Modernisation Fund in 2021-2030.
