Poland's transportation hub CPK construction project ready; construction to start in 2026
An architectural consortium, acting as master architect, has handed over the construction design of the airport, railway station and public transport interchange to Poland's central transportation hub CPK, CPK said in a press release. Construction is scheduled to start in 2026.
"In placing the CPK company under the supervision of the Ministry of Infrastructure, we had a clear task from the beginning that coincided with the goal of the entire government: to update and make real the construction of CPK, a key infrastructure project for Poland," said Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, quoted in the press release.
"Today we have another concrete step on the way to the creation of a central airport. The construction project for the port is ready, the design work is nearing completion, we are clearly accelerating," he added.
As stated, the main building will be connected to piers through which passengers will reach the planes directly. In the first phase of development, the airport will be able to handle up to approximately 11,000 passengers per hour.
On opening day, there will be nearly 140 check-in desks inside, with space reserved for the installation of another check-in island, increasing the number of desks to 170.
The CPK master architect consortium includes the tendered design offices Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, as well as more than 30 other firms from various industries, including, for example, NACO, Kurylowicz & Associates and Cundall. In total, almost 500 designers were involved in the master architect of the airport and station.
According to the updated design assumptions, the CPK airport will have a capacity of up to around 34 million passengers per year in the first stage - with the possibility of further expansion. For comparison, the Warsaw Chopin airport handled around 18.5 million passengers in 2023.
The assumed target share of transfer passengers, who will change planes at CPK Airport, is around 40 percent.
The CPK company assumes that it will obtain a site location decision from the Mazovian region by the end of 2024, upon receipt of which it will be possible to apply for an airport construction permit.
According to the updated schedule, the new airport is expected to be operational at the end of 2032.
