Poland with one of largest population declines in EU in 2024, population already below 36.5 mln - Eurostat
Poland saw one of the largest population declines in the European Union in 2024, with the population already falling below 36.5 million to 36.497 million as of January 1, 2025, according to the EU stats office Eurostat.
In 2024, Latvia experienced the largest depopulation, with a decline of 9.9 people per 1,000, followed by Hungary (down 4.7 persons) and Poland and Estonia (down 3.4). In total, population decline was recorded in eight EU countries.
As of January 1, 2025, the EU population was estimated at 450.4 million, up by 1,070,702 persons from the prior year period. This was the fourth consecutive year of population growth in the EU, following a decline in 2021 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eurostat reports that the observed population growth can be largely attributed to increased migration movements following the COVID-19 pandemic.
