Warsaw mayor still ahead of main rival in presidential race - poll

Poland's capital Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, the presidential candidate of the main ruling party, the centrist Civic Coalition (KO), is projected to win the upcoming election, despite his main opponent Karol Nawrocki gaining popularity, according to a recent poll by IBRIS researcher, commissioned by Rzeczpospolita daily.

According to the latest IBRiS survey published on Wednesday, despite an increase in Nawrocki's popularity from April, Trzaskowski continues to lead the presidential race, with 32.3 percent of prospective votes, down from 36.2 percent a month ago.

Nawrocki, who is endorsed by the socially-conservative Law and Justice (PiS), would receive support from 25.2 percent of voters (up from 22.6 percent previously) in the upcoming election this Sunday.

Rzeczpospolita assessed that nonetheless, the overall election standings remain unchanged, with Trzaskowski expected to win both the first and second rounds.

Should he compete against Nawrocki in the second round, Trzaskowski is projected to secure 53.9 percent of the votes, while 38.4 percent would support his opponent.

In the event that Slawomir Mentzen of the far-right Confederation, currently in third place with 11.2 percent of votes, advances to the second round, he would finish second to Trzaskowski with 33.3 percent of votes, while Trzaskowski would again receive the majority at 53.5 percent.

Among those surveyed, 58.2 percent expressed their intention to vote this Sunday, a decline from 60 percent declared by respondents in April.

The poll was run on April 11-12, on a representative sample of 1,073 adult Poles.

Poland's presidential ballot is scheduled for May 18, with a potential runoff on June 1 if no candidate secures an outright majority in the first round. Poles will elect their next president for a five-year term.
