EC sues Poland in EU court over lack of air quality plans
The European Commission on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Poland in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) concerning obstacles to accessing justice related to air quality.
The lawsuit pertains to plans that, in accordance with the EU air quality directive, should be prepared by countries that have surpassed EU pollution limits. In these plans, countries outline how they intend to reduce pollution.
The Commission assessed that Poland has not provided individuals and environmental organisations the opportunity to file lawsuits in national courts due to insufficient air protection plans or the absence of such plans.
Additionally, on the same day, the Commission lodged a complaint against Poland with the CJEU regarding the non-implementation of provisions of the drinking water directive. The regulation, among other things, updates water quality standards and combats potentially hazardous pollutants, such as substances that disrupt hormonal functions and microplastics.
