PGE Baltica wants to return to contracting phase of Baltica 3 project as soon as possible

Listed power utility PGE's offshore energy unit, PGE Baltica, would like to return to the contracting phase of the Baltica 3 project as soon as possible, taking advantage of the stabilisation of the supply market for offshore wind energy, CEO of PGE Baltica Bartosz Fedurek told the conference at Energy Days in Katowice. The Baltica 2 project is proceeding according to schedule.

"Our flagship project, which is our top priority because it is currently under construction, is Baltica 2, with a capacity of 1.5 GW and an investment outlay of nearly PLN 30 billion," CEO Fedurek told the conference.

As he pointed out, the project is proceeding according to schedule, and PGE Baltica is implementing it with an experienced industry partner, Danish company Orsted.

"All the deadlines we have set so far are being met," Fedurek added.

The project schedule envisages that the first electricity from the farm will flow in the first half of 2027, and by the end of 2027 the project will be put into operation.

Fedurek announced that the company would like to return to contracting the Baltica 3 project, also implemented jointly with Orsted, as soon as possible.

"The project was put on hold at one point and is currently undergoing extensive economic optimisation. We would like to return to the contracting phase of this project as soon as possible, taking advantage of the opportunities, we see opening up in the offshore wind energy supply market," PGE Baltica's CEO said.

As he pointed out, the Baltica 1 project is being prepared for auction for offshore wind energy. The group is also working on the Baltica 9 project.

"We started intensively this year with the so-called site investigation phase, i.e. geophysical and geotechnical reconnaissance, which is the basis for planning offshore projects," said Fedurek.

When asked about implementation challenges, he replied that there were no such challenges in the Baltica 2 project.

"A strong partner guarantees that the project is well designed, and so far, implementation confirms that the schedule is not in any way at risk," CEO Fedurek said.

"As for other projects, we need what large energy investments need, which is definitely a stable regulatory environment. In order for us to implement further projects, maintaining the system of contracts for difference is essential," he added.

As PGE Baltica's CEO pointed out, global supply chains are a challenge because Polish supply chains are still developing.

The PGE's strategy, updated this year, assumes that by 2035, the group will have at least 4 GW of installed capacity in offshore wind energy.
