PKP Intercity railway carrier seeks PLN 2.6 bln in financing from European Investment Bank
Poland's long-distance railway carrier PKP Intercity is seeking funding of PLN 2.95 billion (EUR 689.7 mln) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the purchase and modernisation of rolling stock, the EIB said in a statement.
PKP Intercity is aiming to allocate funds for the purchase of 42 double-decker electric multiple units (EMUs) and the modernisation of 133 coaches.
"The aim is to improve the quality of rail services and promote rail travel in the country as a way of reducing reliance on private vehicles," the EIB wrote.
"As a result, the project will have a positive impact on the local environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving road safety," it added.
The total cost of the project was estimated at PLN 5.9 billion (EUR 1.4 bln).
