PKP PLK rail operator announces PLN 2.3 bln tender for railway line in southern Poland
Poland's railway infrastructure operator PKP PLK has announced a tender for the construction of a railway line between Podleze and Gdow, in the southern part of the country. The estimated value of the task is PLN 2.3 billion (EUR 538.66 mln), PKP PLK said in a press release.
This is part of the large 'Podleze-Piekielko' railway project, which is expected to improve travel between Cracow and the Sadecczyzna region and Podhale. The investment is also expected to facilitate the transport of goods to and from Slovakia.
As stated, new tracks, bridges, viaducts and a more than 900-metre-long tunnel are to be built by 2029.
"What will be happening in this area of Malopolska, but also in other regions of the country, is a completely new rail infrastructure that has never been there," said the deputy minister of infrastructure Piotr Malepszak, quoted in the press release.
"Just as road builders today already have over 5,000 kilometres of motorways and motorways, we want to follow the same path in the railway area. We want to build completely new high-capacity railway lines with the best parameters to carry millions of passengers," he added.
The board member of PKP PLK Marcin Mochocki said that further tenders for this projects are being planned.
"We are preparing further tenders for this project. We plan to launch all the proceedings by the end of this year," announced Mochocki, quoted in the press release.
"We will be driving the new route between Krakow and Nowy Sacz and Zakopane in five years' time," he added.
The construction of the Podleze - Podleze Balachowka and Podleze - Gdow railway lines is part of the 'Podleze-Piekielko' project, PKP PLK's largest investment in the south of Poland.
