PGE SAPoland maintains maximum price for electricity for households in 2025 at 500 PLN/MWh
The maximum price of electricity for households is to be maintained at PLN 500 (EUR 115.40) per MWh next year, while the maximum price for non-household consumers is to be abandoned, according to the draft law of Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment (MKiS). Its cost is approximately PLN 5 billion (EUR 1.2 bln).
"The bill proposes provisions to extend the maximum price for electricity for household energy consumers in 2025 at 500 PLN/MWh," said the regulatory impact assessment to the draft, which will stand before the government today.
The climate ministry pointed out that without statutory intervention, consumers would pay around PLN 623 (EUR 143.79) per MWh - as this is the average price of electricity in tariff group G resulting from the tariffs of ex-officio sellers approved for the period from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025.
"Regardless of this, it is anticipated that trading companies will submit applications for approval of electricity tariffs with a view to reducing the prices in these tariffs in the second half of 2025," the ministry noted.
"In addition, in the event of a change in the external conditions of the authorised entities' operations, which may affect a significant decrease in the prices in the approved tariffs, the draft proposes the introduction of a power for the head of Poland's energy market regulator URE to call on energy companies to reduce these tariffs and submit an appropriate application for a change," it added.
In contrast, the climate ministry is moving away from maintaining a maximum price for electricity for non-household consumers in 2025.
"With regard to non-household customers, their position on the energy market is expected to be relatively better compared to 2023-2024, which makes it possible to abandon the application of the maximum price mechanism to them in 2025," MKiS reasoned.
It was pointed out that especially further price interference for micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises in the current market situation is not justified.
"These customers, as professional entities, should be able to actively participate in the market and take full advantage of the benefits of market mechanisms," the drafters concluded.
The cost of freezing energy prices next year was estimated in the regulatory impact assessment to the draft at PLN 5.058 billion (EUR 1.2 bln).
