Poland to see PLN 6.6 bln invested in Rybnik's energy security by 2030

The estimated level of investment in Rybnik (Silesia) will amount to PLN 6.6 billion (EUR 1.55 bln) by 2030, with these investments intended to ensure the region's energy stability after the phase-out of coal-fired power units, Poland's state assets minister Wojciech Balczun said in response to a parliamentary question regarding the future of the coal-fired power plant in Rybnik owned by listed power utility PGE.

In response to a parliamentary question, Wojciech Balczun announced that analyses at the PGE group concerning the continued operation of the Rybnik coal-fired power plant are ongoing, and that PGE will remain present in Rybnik.

"At the turn of 2026 and 2027, PGE group will complete the construction of a new 900 MW gas and steam unit, which has already secured a long-term contract on the capacity market and will ensure energy security for the entire region for at least the next two decades," the minister pointed out.

He added that further investments are being prepared in Rybnik, including a tender for the construction of a 600 MW OCGT gas-fired unit and work on a large-scale energy storage facility.

"The estimated level of investment in Rybnik in 2024-2030 will amount to PLN 6.6 billion. These measures are aimed at ensuring the region's energy stability after the decommissioning of coal-fired power units," Balczun stressed.

He assured that each time any company makes key business and social decisions, it takes into account and analyses all possible options for using the existing infrastructure.

"The result of such work is specific recommendations regarding the further operation of a given asset. Analyses regarding the Rybnik Power Plant are ongoing," Poland's state assets minister emphasised, referring to the future of this power plant.
