Poland sees over PLN 2.5 bln spent on production of movies and series per year, Netflix's contribution at PLN 400 mln in '22

Poland's total spending on the production of films and series already exceeds PLN 2.5 billion (EUR 580 mln) annually, with Netflix alone committing PLN 400 million (EUR 92.1 mln) to original productions and licensed content in 2022, the company representatives told PAP Biznes. Netflix announces the biggest Polish super production in its history, the disaster series 'Hevelius'.


The five-episode fictionalised series is inspired by the story of the sinking of the ferry Jan Heweliusz, which occurred on January 14, 1993, in the Baltic Sea.

It is being made for Netflix by director Jan Holoubek, screenwriter Kasper Bajon and producer Anna Kepinska.

Hevelius is Poland's largest and most complicated series production in terms of production. It is scheduled to premiere on the Netflix streaming service in 2025.

Neflix has budgeted PLN 400 million (EUR 92.1 mln) for original productions and licensed content in Poland in 2022. Figures for 2023 have not yet been published.

Ilona Lartigue, Netflix's communications director in Poland, pointed out that the Polish audiovisual industry is steadily growing.

"Since the beginning of our operations in Poland, Netflix has already produced more than 40 original films and series, including 'Znachor', '1670', 'Jak pokochalam gangstera', 'Rojst '97', 'Feedback' and 'Wielka woda', and Hevelius is one of the largest of its kind in the history of the Polish audiovisual sector," she told PAP Biznes.

According to the latest report by international consultancy Olsberg SPI, the total expenditure on the production of Polish films and series already exceeds PLN 2.5 billion (EUR 580 mln) annually.

In 2022, 367 feature films, documentaries, animated and short films were produced in Poland. This is a record in recent years and the highest number of productions since 2019.

Experts estimate that the total economic impact of film and series production in Poland in 2022 was worth more than PLN 8.6 billion (EUR 2 bln).

One Polish zloty (EUR 0.23) spent on audiovisual production in Poland generates an economic impact with a total value of nearly PLN 3.5 (EUR 0.81), and every year the production industry creates the equivalent of more than 21,000 jobs.

According to the report, Poland has been experiencing a boom in film and series production in recent years, and this sector of the economy is growing steadily.

The data shows that the number of entrepreneurs involved in film and TV production in Poland has been growing steadily in recent years, exceeding 12,000 companies in 2022.

Broadcasters' spending on Polish films and series has also been growing steadily since 2015 - by an average of 8 percent per year.

The emergence of streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Viaplay and Player has had a significant impact on investment in the audiovisual market.
