Poland's state assets ministry not working on transforming Bogdanka into state-owned company

Poland's Ministry of State Assets (MAP) is not working on transforming listed coal mining group Bogdanka, owned by listed power utility Enea, into a State Treasury company, the ministry said in response to PAP questions. A return to this concept has been demanded by Law and Justice (PiS) politicians and trade unionists, who fear the mine's closure and layoffs.

"No such work is being carried out at the Ministry of State Assets," MAP's communications department said on Monday in response to a question from PAP on whether the concept of Bogdanka as a state-controlled company is under consideration.

The ministry added that LW Bogdanka's majority shareholder is Enea, and the goal of any shareholder - especially majority ones - is to increase the group's profitability.

"This is also the case with Enea S.A. - where the company's objective is to build the value of the Enea group, i.e. the individual companies, and the actions taken by the company serve to achieve this objective," MAP pointed out.

"Regardless of this, it should be stressed that Grupa Enea attaches great importance to the issue of employment stability and employee rights in its subsidiaries," it added.

A return to the idea of transforming Bogdanka into a state-owned company is being demanded by Law and Justice (PiS) politicians and trade unionists. In their view, Bogdanka is currently threatened with liquidation, and this threatens Poland's energy security and means redundancies, thus increasing unemployment in the region.
