Tauron's management board has approved the investment committee's decision to close the project to build a gas-steam unit at the Lagisza power plant in Bedzin and the decision to start the planning stage of the project to build a cogeneration heat source at the Lagisza power plant in Bedzin, the company said in a release.
The company said that the new district heating system is to include a 140 MWt/120 MWe gas-fired cogeneration unit adapted for zero-emission fuel production, a unit using Power to Heat technology and a heat accumulator. Energy from this hybrid system is to replace the volume produced in the current coal unit.
The new district heating system would be built on the premises of the Lagisza Power Plant in Bedzin and would replace heat production from the depleted coal unit.
Tauron said that the project is part of its Heat Area Decarbonisation programme, which envisages the commissioning of more than 1.1 GW of new or modernised district heating capacity by 2030.
At the same time, the company has decided not to continue work on the construction of a 400 MWe and 250 MWt cogeneration unit due to the identified risk of not maintaining the project's profitability.
