Poland's development ministry wants CFD for energy-intensive industries, price at PLN 250/MWh

As part of support for the energy-intensive sector, Poland's Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (MRiT) wants to propose a contract for difference for energy-intensive industries with an energy price of PLN 250 (EUR 58.42) per MWh instead of a current PLN 490 (EUR 114.51)/MWh, minister Krzysztof Paszyk told a conference. The estimated cost of this solution is PLN 1.5 billion (EUR 350.55 mln) per year; MRiT wants this contract to come into force in 2026.

"There can be no economic development without strong industry, and in Poland this largely means energy-intensive enterprises," Paszyk said.

The minister pointed to the ceramics, cement, metallurgy and glass industries.

"Our goal is to stabilise energy prices for the sector because that is the biggest problem today. Our target is PLN 250 per megawatt hour instead of PLN 490 today. This is a proposal that will guarantee competitiveness for these companies," he added.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (MRiT) wants to propose a package of solutions for the energy-intensive sector, including a contract for difference, under which a stable energy price of PLN 250 (EUR 58.42) per megawatt hour would be proposed.

As economic development deputy minister Michal Jaros explained, in return, these companies would have to invest in renewable energy sources.

He added that the ministry wants this contract to come into force in 2026, estimating the cost of this solution at approximately PLN 1.5 billion (EUR 350.55 mln) per year from the fund from which compensation is currently paid to energy companies.
