EP accepts Polish initiative as Europe's flagship defence programme
During a vote focused on bolstering European security, the European Parliament (EP) has designated Poland's Shield East programme as Europe’s flagship defence initiative.
In the resolution approved by the EP on Wednesday, the MEPs stated that protection of the European Union's (EU) land, air and maritime borders was essential for the overall security of Europe, particularly its eastern frontier.
According to the document, Poland's Shield East and the Baltic Defence Line should be considered as the EU's flagship defence programmes aimed at deterring potential threats from the East.
Polish MEP Andrzej Halicki, representing the centre-right Civic Platform (PO), expressed on the X platform following the vote that "Shield East is not just a programme for Poland but one that enhances the security of all of Europe." He urged for the initiative to receive backing from the European Union.
According to Michal Szczerba, another MEP from PO, the EP's support for Shield East was a clear sign that Poland was shaping the way of thinking about security in Europe, aligning with the theme of the country's six-month presidency of the European Council.
Poland's Shield East is a programme developed by the Ministry of National Defence and the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces. It entails constructing various types of fortifications, terrain obstacles, and military infrastructure along Poland's borders with Russia and Belarus, stretching for approximately 800 km.
The plans also include the development of reconnaissance and threat detection systems, forward bases, logistical hubs, warehouses and the deployment of anti-drone systems.
The Baltic Defence Line is a planned joint defence line by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania along their borders with Russia and Belarus. (PAP)
