Orlen SAOrlen energy launches installation of Europe's largest wind turbines
Poland's largest energy concern Orlen, jointly with Northland Power, has launched the installation of Europe's largest wind turbines with a capacity of 15 MW, the group said in a press release. The first wind turbine was placed in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.
"This is the actual opening of the history of a new branch of the Polish economy - offshore wind energy. One minute of turbine operation will produce enough energy to power an electric bus over a distance of 100 kilometres," Orlen said in the press release.
It added that the turbines have been manufactured by the Danish company Vestas, and their components are made, among others, at a factory located in Szczecin. The Baltic Power offshore wind farm will already be able to cover 3 percent of the country's energy needs next year.
"As part of the Baltic Power project, the first of 76 turbines have already been installed. Each of them is capable of generating enough energy to power all the households in a city the size of Stalowa Wola or Krosno. The operating efficiency of the offshore turbines reaches almost 50 percent, an efficiency comparable to conventional sources," Orlen pointed out.
The farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. Baltic Power will be the first wind farm supplying energy to Poland from the sea.
