Orlen SAOrlen energy launches research in renewable ammonia market
Poland's largest energy concern Orlen is launching market research and talks with potential suppliers of low-emission and renewable ammonia, which will be used to produce fertilisers while reducing emissions at the Anwil plant in Wloclawek, the company said in a press release. Orlen is also considering the possibility of using renewable ammonia as a source of hydrogen to produce aviation synthetic fuels.
It was reported that the market research launched by Orlen will cover the long-term supply of ammonia produced using low-carbon hydrogen and non-biological renewable hydrogen (RFNBO). Both types of ammonia will be used in fertiliser production and contribute to the decarbonisation of the downstream area.
Orlen also intends to obtain information on potential capital partnerships in the ammonia value chain.
"Information on potential supplies of ammonia produced with renewable and low-carbon hydrogen will be used in the selection of the group's decarbonisation and energy transition scenarios," the concern said in the press release.
"Accelerating the transition means that Orlen group's demand for low-carbon or renewable hydrogen will increase to around 350,000 tonnes per year from 2035," it added.
It was pointed out that, in line with the strategy, Orlen will aim to decarbonise its refinery and petrochemical production. This is also related to the EU's REDIII directive, which assumes that from 2030, the share of RFNBO (renewable, inorganic origin) hydrogen in total hydrogen consumption in industrial processes - outside fuel production and energy use - will be 42 percent, and 60 percent from 2035.
