EU greenlights EUR 192 mln gaming hub project in Poland
The European Commission (EC) has approved EUR 192 million in state aid for Poland to support the construction of a gaming and technology hub in the southern city of Katowice, co-financed by the EU Just Transition Fund.
The hub, located on the site of the former "Wieczorek" hard coal mine, will serve the gaming and technology industries, including artificial intelligence development. The aid, granted as a direct subsidy, was deemed compatible with EU state aid rules and economic development provisions.
"The aid is necessary and appropriate for the implementation of the project, which will bring significant socio-economic benefits to the creative sector and the Just Transition area in Katowice," EC said in a statement on Friday.
The first stage of construction will involve the revitalisation of historic and modern buildings on the site, as well as the construction of an underground passage, road infrastructure, and parking facilities.
The second stage will include the construction of a 5,000-square-metre hall to house e-sports and television studios, production spaces, laboratories, warehouses, and facilities for up to 2,000 visitors. The project is expected to be completed by early 2028. (PAP)
