Orlen energy inks deal with Equinor for supply of over 6 mln tonnes of crude oil

Poland's largest energy concern Orlen has signed an agreement with Norwegian Equinor for the supply of over 6 million tonnes of crude oil from the Johan Sverdrup field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the company said in a press release. The contracted volume will cover approximately 15 percent of the Orlen group's annual demand for crude oil. Deliveries will commence in September.

The contract was signed for one year and provides for deliveries by tanker from the port of Mongstad in Norway. Transport can be carried out to refineries in Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. This is the first annual contract concluded with the Norwegian company.

The Johan Sverdrup field, from which the contracted oil will come, is the third largest on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

"We are building energy security for Poland and the entire region. We have made all our refineries completely independent of Russian raw materials. This was possible thanks to the effective diversification of supply sources," said Orlen's CEO Ireneusz Fafara, quoted in the press release.

"The next step on this path is the first long-term agreement with Equinor, which gives us access to the best quality raw materials with high production efficiency. (...)," he added.

Orlen's CEO pointed to the particular importance of the fact that Johan Sverdrup is one of the oil fields where extraction is carried out with significantly reduced CO2 emissions, thanks to the platforms being powered by electricity from the mainland, mainly from renewable energy sources.

In June, Orlen completed its last contract for oil supplies from Russia. Currently, Orlen's refineries process oil from the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, the North Sea, Africa and the Americas.

In the first half of 2025, Orlen's plants processed a total of 9.8 million tonnes of crude oil, 5 percent more than in the prior year period.
