Bank Pekao SAPekao lender as most resilient bank in Europe in EBA's stress tests
Poland's second largest lender by assets Bank Pekao proved to be the most resilient bank in Europe to negative macroeconomic scenarios among the 64 banks surveyed in this year's edition of the pan-European stress tests conducted by the European Banking Authority (EBA), Pekao said in a press release.
"The EBA stress tests are a very important test for us to see how well we are prepared for crises and macroeconomic turmoil. Unfortunately, recent years have not spared us such concerns, which is why the resilience of financial institutions, which are key to the stable functioning of the entire economy, is so important," said Pekao's CEO Cezary Stypulkowski, quoted in a press release.
"I am proud that this year, once again, we have confirmed in the tests that Pekao is one of the safest banks in Europe," he added.
EBA stress tests are periodic assessments of the condition of European banks, intended to serve as an important source of information for the supervisory review and evaluation process. Their purpose is to help the competent authorities assess the ability of banks to meet prudential requirements under extreme scenarios. In Poland, two lenders, including Bank Pekao, were subject to a direct examination by the EBA.
As reported, in this year's test, Pekao turned out to be the most resilient to stress factors among the 64 banks included in the sample. Resilience is measured as the difference between the consolidated Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio without the application of transitional provisions between the starting point (2024) and the stress scenario (for 2027). The result is the same regardless of whether the reported ratios or those recalculated in accordance with CRR3 are taken into account at the starting point.
