S&P raises mBank credit rating to 'BBB+' with stable outlook

S&P Global Ratings agency raised its long-term issuer credit ratings on listed lender mBank, the Warsaw-listed unit of Germany's Commerzbank to 'BBB+' from 'BBB', the agency said in a report.


"Poland-based mBank has taken significant steps to reduce the risk on its Swiss franc-related mortgage loans while its underlying profitability remains strong," S&P pointed out in the report.

"As legal risks ease, we expect lower earnings volatility," it added.

The agency pointed out that mBank has also improved its capitalisation, including with the issuance of an Additional Tier 1 instrument in December 2024.

"As such, we now expect mBank's risk-adjusted capital ratio to improve and exceed 10 percent over the next two years," S&P assessed.

"We therefore raised our long-term issuer credit ratings on mBank to 'BBB+' from 'BBB'," the agency concluded, adding it considers the outlook for the lender as stable based on S&P view that mBank can maintain its solid profitability, strong capital, and a balanced risk profile over the next 24 months.
