Poland's PM seeks vote of confidence amid presidential election result
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk asks parliament for a vote of confidence as he's convinced his government holds a mandate to govern despite increased challenges following the presidential election, Tusk told a conference before the government meeting on Wednesday.
"I am aware that today, all of Poland, both our voters and our opponents (...) are waiting for a clear position and a certain perspective. I would like to stress very clearly that I am asking for a vote of confidence because I have the conviction, faith, and certainty that we have a mandate to govern, to take full responsibility for what is happening in Poland," Tusk said.
He pointed out that the challenges facing the ruling coalition are greater than previously expected due to the presidential election result.
"Given the political situation following the presidential elections, clear information is needed about where we stand. I am asking the higher house of the parliament today for a vote of confidence for our government, for rather obvious reasons. The political calendar has shown very clearly what challenges lie ahead for the ruling coalition," Poland's Prime Minister appealed.
In his view, the President-elect Karol Nawrocki may be just as resistant to change as the outgoing one.
"A president reluctant to the changes we proposed for Poland and our voters will be replaced by a president at least equally reluctant to these changes and proposals that seemed attractive to 11 million voters on October 15, 2023, and are still in force," he pointed out.
