EC to take 'precautionary measures' against bird flu in Poland
Specific "precautionary measures" will be enacted in several regions of Poland as a preventive action against the potential spread of the avian influenza virus, the European Commission (EC) spokesperson has announced.
The special measures will be implemented next week in high-risk areas, encompassing the northern Kujawsko-Pomorskie, central Lodzkie and Mazowieckie, northeastern Warminsko-Mazurskie, and west-central Wielkopolskie provinces, Eva Hrnczirzova told PAP on Friday.
She added that there have been 53 reported cases of the virus in the Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie regions over the past two months, with a total of 73 cases nationwide. She noted that while the virus has been identified in other EU member countries, Poland's situation is particularly concerning.
Hrnczirzova further argued that the current season marks the spring migration of birds, and several EU member states, including Poland, have observed an uptick in cases, which increases the risk of disease transmission among poultry.
