WSE's decision to temporarily suspend trading due to record number of brokerage orders since opening

Monday's one-hour suspension of trading on Warsaw Stock Exchange was due to the record number of brokerage orders since the start of the session, which could have led to an instability in the trading system, the WSE's operator GPW said in a statement. It was indicated that the number of operations on brokerage orders exceeded the average by more than 300 percent and was 40 percent higher compared to the session of April 4, 2025.

"From the WSE's point of view, this is an operational action in line with the procedures in force. In order to ensure that investors are able to trade at the closing of the session, and to preserve the security of trading, the head of the session (...) has decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of brokerage orders," WSE's operator GPW explained in the statement.

"We are currently seeing high market volatility, although in the past there have been sessions with even higher volatility. This time, however, we have seen an unusually high number of incoming and modified orders, intensified by the activity of algorithmic trading strategies," it added.

According to the operator, WSE therefore decided to suspend trading for an hour to avoid the risk of reaching the stability limits of the trading system.

"The safety of trading requires that equal conditions of access to order placement and market information are provided to all participants, as well as a guarantee of settlement and clearing of concluded transactions," it wrote.

After 15:00 local time, the WSE announced the suspension of trading for safety reasons on all markets from 15:15 to 16:15. From 16:15 to 16:30, there was a phase of accepting orders, and continuous trading had been resumed from 16:30.

Prior to the suspension of trading, the WIG20 index was down 2 percent at 2,418.2 points.

When continuous trading resumed at 16:30, the WIG20 was down 0.56 percent to around 2,455 points and the WIG fell 0.77 percent to around 88,354 points.

The WIG20 fell 1.49 percent to 2,431.32 points at Monday's closing. The WIG lost 1.47 percent to 87,727.11 points, the mWIG40 was down 1.28 percent to 6,706.60 points and the sWIG80 went down 1.77 percent to 25,318.19 points.
