New Westinghouse-Bechtel agreement alters business terms for Polish nuclear project
A new agreement between Westinghouse-Bechtel and the 100-percent state-owned SPV Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ) changes business rules and responsibility division for Poland’s first nuclear power plant, the acting CEO of 100-percent state-owned SPV Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ) Piotr Piela told journalists.
Piela announced that the recently signed agreement with the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium introduces significant changes to the business framework for Poland’s inaugural nuclear power plant in Pomerania.
He explained that the new contract will now guide PEJ in refining the construction project, marking a shift from earlier conceptual discussions to a precise, site-specific design for the Choczewo location.
"The new agreement changes our business principles, alters the division of responsibility, and shifts the approach to project implementation," he said.
He assessed that these changes improve the comfort and interests of the Polish state.
When asked about the most important modification, Piela stated that the American side will now bear greater responsibility for product integration.
"One part of our team is working on the implementation of the contract (EDA), while the other, after a pause, is already starting to negotiate the main contract (for the general contract). This is a much more important document, with a much more significant amount, a much bigger responsibility for both parties," he pointed out.
Piela said that PEJ aims to commission the first nuclear plant as early as possible.
Poland signed on Monday a bridge agreement (EDA) with US contractors, the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium, for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania.
The EDA contract is a bridge agreement between the design contract that Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ) and the Westinghouse–Bechtel consortium signed in 2023 and the comprehensive execution contract for the 1st NPP in Pomerania under the EPC formula - Engineering, Procurement, Construction.
