Poland adopts resolution on involvement in EU SAFE programme
Poland's Council of Ministers has adopted a resolution aimed at obtaining financial assistance from the European Union under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, the government information centre CIR announced. SAFE is an EU loan programme for military purchases totalling up to EUR 150 billion.
"The Council of Ministers adopted a resolution authorising the minister of national defence [MON - MI ed.] to submit a declaration (Call for Expression of Interest) on the involvement of the Republic of Poland in activities aimed at obtaining financial assistance from the European Union under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, submitted by the minister of national defence," CIR said in the announcement following the government meeting.
It added that Poland's use of SAFE funds could be an alternative and cheaper source of financing for purchases for the Polish army than issuing Treasury bonds.
The Prime Minister's office KPRM recalled that the SAFE instrument is one of the pillars of the European Commission's 'ReArm Europe' plan, which aims to mobilise funds from the EU budget to support and accelerate national investments in the defence industry.
SAFE is a loan programme worth up to EUR 150 billion, and the loans will be guaranteed by the EU budget.
