Poland's parliament lower house Sejm Speaker asks c. bank governor to lower interest rates
Polish parliament's lower house Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia has written to Poland's central bank NBP governor Adam Glapinski, asking him to consider lowering interest rates, Holownia announced on X.
"Dear Mr Governor, bearing in mind the situation of economic participants, in particular Polish borrowers bearing high costs of repaid loans, I would like to ask you, as the head of the Monetary Policy Council, to consider lowering the interest rates of Poland's central bank NBP," Holownia wrote in a letter addressed to the NBP governor.
Holownia pointed out that a clear trend of monetary easing by central banks can be identified in Europe.
"In the Czech Republic, for example, interest rates were set at the level as at the beginning of 2022, i.e. at the lowest level in the last three years. Meanwhile, in Poland, interest rates are still 3 percentage points above the level at the beginning of 2022," he wrote.
"The macroeconomic and international context provides evidence that the debate on easing restrictive monetary policy is also necessary in our country," the Sejm Speaker added.
In Holownia's opinion, an interest rate cut would be an important stimulus for the entire Polish economy, capable of creating space for investment, new jobs and increased demand.
"For this reason, I hope that Poland's central bank NBP, especially the Monetary Policy Council, in the decisions it makes, takes into account the pace of economic recovery and the cost of living currently borne by the citizens of Poland," he concluded.
