Adam Szlapka named Polish government spokesman
Poland's current Minister of European Affairs, Adam Szlapka, has been named the spokesman of the government by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
"We are here today together with Minister Adam Szlapka who has decided to assume responsibility for communication and information, so to put it briefly (...) I am introducing the government spokesman to you," Tusk told a press conference on Friday.
He added that since the Polish presidency of the EU Council lasts until the end of June this year, the future government spokesman will still have to complete the duties related to his ministerial function.
Therefore, Tusk said, Szlapka will formally take the position on July 1, one day after the Polish presidency of the EU Council ends.
Szlapka has been the leader of the Nowoczesna party, which is part of the ruling Civic Coalition (KO), since November 2019 and the Minister for European Union Affairs in Tusk's government since December 2023.
He first won a mandate as an MP in 2015, then in 2019 and 2023. In the last parliamentary elections, he received 149,064 votes, which was the third highest result in the country. He was beaten only by Tusk and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS).
